「環境変化に応じた自然淘汰による急速な進化の実証」
ガラパゴス諸島でのダーウィンフィンチ類に関する35年以上にもわたる野外研究を通じて、生物の形態や行動が環境変化に応じて急速に進化することを示した。この研究は、野外における自然淘汰による進化機構の解明によって進化学、生態学の分野へ多大な貢献をしただけでなく、進化を実証することで、一般社会にも大きな影響を与えた。
