-The 2009 Kyoto Prize Laureates (June 19)
The Inamori Foundation has selected the 2009 Kyoto Prize Laureates. The Kyoto Prize is an International Award honoring those who have contributed significantly to the Scientific, Cultural or Spiritual Betterment of Mankind. The Prize is presented annually in each of the following three categories: Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, and Arts and Philosophy.
Today, the Inamori Foundation is pleased to announce the Laureates for the 2009 Kyoto Prize as follows:

The Kyoto Prize Presentation Ceremony will be held at the Kyoto International Conference Center on November 10, 2009. At the Ceremony, each Laureate will be presented with a diploma, a Kyoto Prize Medal (20K gold), and an Honorarium Prize of 50 million yen per category.

-Press Conference: Announcement of the Laureates for the 2009 Kyoto Prize (June 19)
Inamori Foundation held a Press Conference to make the Announcement of the Laureates for the 2009 Kyoto Prize at the Inamori Center of Kyoto University. At the conference, Shun-ichi Amari (Chairman, Kyoto Prize Executive Committee), Hiroyuki Sakaki (Chairman, Kyoto Prize Committee in Advanced Technology), Yoh Iwasa (Chairman, Kyoto Prize Selection Committee in Basic Sciences), and Shuji Takashina (Chairman, Kyoto Prize Committee in Arts and Philosophy) attended.
Chairman Amari commented in regard to this Year's Laureates that,
"We are so delighted that the 2009 Laureates have all been evaluated based on their constant, indomitable and unshakable efforts in their Research which have resulted in these achievements."
The Chairman specifically mentioned the two Researchers who are awarded in Basic Sciences (the 1st Couple to receive the Award in its history) on the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Kyoto Prize. Drs. Peter and Rosemary Grant are the Laureates who have been engaging in research concerning Microevolution through Natural Selection on the Galapagos Islands. Coincidently, this year marks the 200th Anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth.
