-Birthday celebration for Mr. Pierre Boulez held at the Pompidou Centre (March 9)
On the evening of March 9, the Pompidou Centre in Paris was the scene of a soiree to celebrate the birthday of Mr. Pierre Boulez, who turned 85 on March 26. The event began with speeches from the host, Pompidou Centre President Alain Seban, as well as Frédéric Mitterrand, French Minister of Culture and Communication, followed by a video presentation on the Kyoto Prize, which Mr. Boulez won last year. After this, there was an advance viewing of a television documentary, Pierre Boulez: A Radical Adventurer. The documentary was aired on nationwide television in France. Attended by some 300 guests, mainly people from cultural circles, the party was a lively affair.
Mr. Boulez is still vigorously active. Indeed, on the day of the party, he was conducting a rehearsal at the Cité de la Musique and took the time out to speak with Inamori Foundation Senior Managing Director Toyomi Inamori before attending the event held in his honor. Speaking to Mr. Inamori for the first time in four months, Mr. Boulez expressed his eagerness to perform a public rehearsal and to meet with local students at the Kyoto Prize Symposium in San Diego this April.

-Kyoto Prize Intellect Network
Visiting former Kyoto Prize laureates Drs. Leonard Herzenberg and Donald Knuth (February 15, 16)

One of the aims of the Inamori Foundation is to establish the Kyoto Prize Intellect Network by promoting continued interaction with former Kyoto Prize laureates. We recently caught up with Dr. Leonard Herzenberg (the 2006 laureate) and Dr. Donald Knuth (the 1996 laureate), both of Stanford University, California.
On February 15, we visited Dr. Herzenberg's residence on the campus of Stanford University. Dr. Herzenberg and his wife both have a deep interest in Japanese culture and have a self-designed Japanese garden in their yard. The doctor belies his age with his sprightly energy - he is 78 years old - and he maintains a habit of inviting his "extended family" of researchers, friends and their families to his home once a week to maintain warm friendship. What is more, Dr. Herzenberg is passionate about nurturing subsequent generations of researchers, and his laboratory has around thirty young research fellows from a wide variety of countries. Dr. Herzenberg plans to visit Japan this summer.
The following day, we stopped by the laboratory of Dr. Knuth, also at Stanford University. We had not met Dr. Knuth since he received the Kyoto Prize fourteen years ago, but the atmosphere was just as relaxed and cordial as if we had been in regular touch. Dr. Knuth is currently busy writing the sequel to The Art of Computer Programming, which he donated to the Kyoto Prize Library. Regarding the Inamori Foundation's activities, Dr. Knuth said, "I think it is wonderful how President Inamori inspires people to change for the better. I hope that I, too, can live an ethical life and have some small positive influence on others in my own way."

03: Obituary

Astrophysicist and professor emeritus at Kyoto University Dr. Chushiro Hayashi (laureate of the 1995 Kyoto Prize) passed away on February 28 aged 89. Through studies of stellar evolution and the solar system, Dr. Hayashi developed theories explaining many astronomical phenomena and contributed immeasurably to the maturation of modern astrophysics. Dr. Hayashi donated his Kyoto Prize money to the Astronomical Society of Japan for the establishment of the Hayashi Chushiro Prize. Since 1996, the Hayashi Chushiro Prize has been awarded annually to astronomers of outstanding achievement. We offer our prayers for the souls of the departed.
