On April 22, the InaRIS Fellowship Award Ceremony was held at a hotel in Kyoto.

The 2023 InaRIS Fellows were recruited under the theme “Transcending the Future with Informatics.” As a result of impartial and rigorous screening, Yasutaka Kamei (Associate Professor, Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, Kyushu University) and Yoshihiro Tanaka (Professor and Special Advisor to the President, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya Institute of Technology) were selected.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the InaRIS Chair Shigetada Nakanishi addressed, “In case you could find unexpected prospects, the short-term grants are not always sufficient to support challenges for their possibility. On the other hand, this program expects that long-term support of 10 years enables your challenge to explore potentials to your heart’s contents.” Following the selection report by Hiroto Yasuura, the Chair of the 2023 InaRIS Fellow Selection Committee, certificates were presented to this year’s Fellows by Shoichi Himono, the Executive Managing Director of Inamori Foundation.

After receiving the certificate, each of the two Fellows delivered a speech on the stage. Dr. Kamei said, “While information technology such as ChatGPT is developing rapidly, in the first place, I will identify technologies that will become obsolete and technologies that will become universal. Then, I would like to make progress in technologies that enable software development by machine-human interaction over the next decade.” Dr. Tanaka also expressed with enthusiasm, “I have ambition in my research that if other persons’ subjective sense for the world can be visualized through informatization of tactile sensation, we mankind will be able to not only obtain pragmatic benefits but also progress culturally and ethically by changing recognition of the world and understanding what others are thinking”

Four previous years’ Fellows also attended the ceremony. After the award ceremony, participants were happily interacting and encouraging each other here and there.
