Effects of environmental variation on evolutionary rescue: Theory and experiments
Keyword
Summary
Understanding extinction processes of populations is not only a central topic in basic ecology and evolutionary biology, but also an important issue with practical applications. Recent studies have emphasized the potential importance of "evolutionary rescue" where organisms rapidly evolve to adapt to environmental changes and thereby avoid extinction. I will focus on the effects of environmental fluctuations on evolutionary rescue by combining plankton microcosm experiments with mathematical modeling to deepen our understanding of interactions between evolution and extinction.

Message

By integrating ecology, evolutionary biology, and population genetics, I aim to conduct research that is both fundamentally significant and practically relevant, utilizing a combination of plankton microcosm experiments and mathematical modeling.
