On April 20, the 2024 InaRIS Fellowship Award Ceremony was held at a hotel in Kyoto.

The 2024 InaRIS Fellows were recruited under the theme “Creating Innovative Medical Therapies Through the Convergence of Multidiverse Disciplines.” As a result of impartial and rigorous screening, Dr. Hiroshi Suzuki (Professor, Graduate School of Medicine, Nagoya University) and Dr. Ayuko Hoshino (Professor, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo) were selected.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the InaRIS Chair Dr. Shigetada Nakanishi addressed, “The method of discovering new principles from a large amount of data is becoming a major trend worldwide. I hope that the two Fellows will not only follow the trend, but will also pave their own paths. I also hope that they will be able to pursue their basic research spontaneously and open-mindedly over the next 10 years.”

Following the selection report by Dr. Jun Takahashi, the Chair of the 2024 InaRIS Fellow Selection Committee, certificates were presented to this year’s Fellows by Shinobu Inamori-Kanazawa, the President of the Inamori Foundation.

After receiving the certificate, each of the two Fellows delivered a speech on the stage. Dr. Suzuki described his vision: “I would like to make it possible to mathematically understand the control of information in life, in other words, how genetic information works. I would also like to lead it to new treatment methods that can suppress the recurrence of cancer due to the evolution of cancer cells.”

Dr. Hoshino also expressed with enthusiasm, “My amazement at how complex life can be made from simple materials is what led me to a career in science. In addition, encounters with various people led me to the study of exosomes and cancer metastasis. In the future, I would like to investigate the potential roles of exosomes in physiological contexts.”

The ceremony was followed by a luncheon, which was filled with short speeches by attendees, including previous Fellows and selection committee members, as well as pleasant conversation.
