I hope to add a new perspective on sexuality and family diversity through this study by focusing on the relationships that are built through the practice of care, rather than assuming that care is provided based on pre-conceived ideas of relationships, such as a parent–child relationship.
In Maale, southwestern Ethiopia, there is a third gender category called ashitime, which refers to those who have male bodies but cannot participate in reproduction and assume feminine roles. This study investigates the case of child fostering by ashitime and clarifies how relationships beyond the existing kinship and gender frameworks are established, focusing on the practice of care. Field research was conducted in August 2025 and March 2026. Through a reexamination of the concept of “ashitime” and interviews regarding individual cases, insights were gained into the life strategies employed by asitime to establish socially mutually supportive relationships.
