Research topics
Creation of multifunctional ceramics by laser powder bed fusion
Summary
This work aims to enhance the laser absorptivity of ceramics by incorporating high laser-absorption nano-additives, and to develop multifunctional ceramic materials that simultaneously possess high strength, high toughness, and high electrical conductivity via ultra-high temperature laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process.

Message

This work can contribute the understanding of fabricating composite powders and new ceramic materials.

Outline of Research Achievments

Due to their low laser absorptivity for sufficient fusion, and high thermal stresses induced by the rapid heating and cooling of laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process, the fabrication of dense ceramic components is hindered. In this study, carbon material was mixed with ceramic powders for enhancing the laser absorptivity by leveraging the high absorptivity of carbon. Under the ultra-high-temperature environment of L-PBF, the formation of nanoscale metallic phases was also induced, resulting in the fabrication of multifunctional ceramic materials possessing high strength, high toughness, and high electrical conductivity.
